Ski socks, compared

A ski sock is the one item on this site where the instinct is exactly wrong: thicker is colder. A thick sock compresses inside a fitted boot, squeezes the foot, and cuts the circulation that was doing the heating — and two pairs are worse than one for the same reason. So the first thing to read is the thickness, and the right answer is one thin-to-medium pair. The merino content is the real specification and it dominates this shelf: wool holds warmth when damp, resists smell over several days, and the percentage matters more than the word, because « merino blend » covers everything from 80 % down to a token amount over a synthetic body. Pure cotton has no place here. The padding is next, and the point is where it sits, not how much there is: shin, instep and heel are where a boot presses, and padding across the sole is padding in the way. The height must clear the boot cuff — a sock that stops below the shell puts a seam exactly where the plastic bites, and the good ones are sold as knee-length for that reason. The size bracket is printed as a range (39–42, 43–46) and a sock that rucks is a sock that blisters. The last figure is the one that sets value: the pack count, because this shelf is almost entirely sold in twos and threes — three of the seven pairs here are two-pair packs at 14.99 € — while a single technical pair costs more than a pack of two. We compare merino content, thickness, padding zones, height, size range and pack.

How we assess products

The live figure beside a product went and asked the shop for it the moment this page opened; any amount written into the text has not moved since the sentence was drafted, and it is the first of the two that counts.
