Ice grips for boots, compared

These are the spikes that pull over an ordinary boot for the walk to the lift, the frozen car park and the path to a mountain hut — not the crampons that mount on a touring ski, which are a different family here, and not technical mountaineering crampons either. The headline figure is the spike count and this shelf spreads wide: 10, 13, 14 and 24 spikes per foot, at 7.99 € to 51.29 €. More is not simply better. A dense field of short spikes grips packed snow and ice underfoot and is quiet on the tarmac between; a smaller number of deeper points bites harder on a frozen slope and is unpleasant to walk on where there is no ice. The material matters more than the count: stainless steel stays sharp and does not rust in a wet pocket, and the cheap plated studs round off in a season. The harness is what decides whether the grips are still on your feet after a kilometre — a moulded elastomer sleeve that stretches over the whole boot, ideally with a heel strap over the top, against a thin rubber band that rolls off the toe. This is the part that fails, and the listings that name the material are saying something. The size bracket is printed in EU shoe sizes, 35–47 on the widest here, and a set stretched beyond its range will not hold. Note what they are not for: a set made for a walking path is not sold for climbing, and this page reports the surface each maker names.
