Snowboard stomp pads, compared

A stomp pad is a patch of grip stuck between the bindings, and it exists for the two minutes of every run that nobody photographs: stepping off a chairlift and skating to the queue with one foot strapped in and the other loose on a waxed board. Without it the free foot slides off, and that is how beginners fall at the top of the lift rather than on the piste. The shelf divides on grip type, and the three kinds behave differently. A foam or rubber mat — Dakine and Burton at 20 to 28 € here — grips through friction, is kind to a boot sole, and wears smooth over a season. Aluminium spikes or studs — 20 cm of conical rivets at 19.99 € in this corpus — bite into anything including ice on the sole, and they are the choice for a hard boot and a cold day. Moulded plastic studs, sold in packs of eighteen at 12 €, sit between the two and let the rider place the grip exactly where the foot lands. The adhesive is what decides whether any of it survives February: a cold-rated 3M backing on a clean, warm topsheet holds all season, and a cheap film lifts at the first thaw. The thickness is a real trade — a tall pad grips more and catches the boot when strapping in — and the coverage follows the stance, because a pad the size of a coin is decoration.
