This shelf is unashamedly about the car rather than the mountain, and it earns its place because the ski day begins and ends with a vehicle under fifteen centimetres of snow at a trailhead. The figure that decides everything is the length, and the corpus covers it precisely: 41 cm for the two fixed combination tools here, and three telescopic models that run 77–105, 77–108 and 96–121 cm — the last of which reaches the middle of an estate roof. Roof snow is not optional — it slides onto the windscreen at the first brake — and a 41 cm brush cannot reach it. The bristles are where paint is either protected or not: soft, dense, non-abrasive filaments push snow without dragging grit across a clear coat, and a stiff cheap brush is a scouring pad. Some models put a foam squeegee or a rubber blade on the reverse for slush. The scraper at the other end is the second tool: stepped ice-breaker teeth for a thick frozen layer, a wide square blade for the sweep, and a brass edge cuts faster and will mark glass-mounted heating elements, which is why most are plastic.
